Getting a Library Card
How much does it cost to get a library card?
A new library card is free! A replacement card is $1.00 for patrons 18 and older.
What do I need to bring?
A valid photo ID with proof of current address. If you’ve moved recently, bring a recent piece of mail, a change of address card, electric bill, etc.
Can I get a digital library card?
Yes! Access our library catalog to set up a temporary online library card. An online registration can only be made for those 13 and older and is only valid for checking titles out on Overdrive/Libby and Hoopla. This is valid for 6 months. After that, you can visit either of our library branches to get a physical card.
Who can get a library card?
Anyone! Any person of any age can get a library card. Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian present.
How long is the library card valid for?
Library cards are valid for a lifetime. After 3 years, staff may ask you to update information or fill out a new registration card.
Where can I use my card?
Dorchester County has two library branches; Cambridge and Hurlock. However, your card can be used at all 8 counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. You can checkout and return items from any location. Your card also provides access to titles on our digital libraries!
What types of cards are offered?
1. Adult card: Members are responsible for all materials borrowed and any fees accrued. Adults can check out any circulating items, use the public computers, and access library databases and digital content.
2. Children’s card: Ages 0-17 must have a parent or guardian present. Children’s cards allow for the ability to check out all material types, with the exception of rated-R videos, and use Internet-accessible computers with parental permission. The person registering a child for a library card assumes all responsibility for items borrowed including content type, damages, fees, etc.
3. Organization/Entity card: Fellow non-profits, community agencies, daycare centers, etc. may apply for an organization card. Adults 18 and older may apply using the same information required for regular adult cards and proof of ties to the entity applying. The organization assumes responsibility for items borrowed including content type, damages, fees, returning items, etc.
How many items can I check out?
At the Dorchester County Public Library branches, you can have a maximum of 50 items checked out. Both branches limit DVD checkouts to 5 per card. *Please note this may vary when visiting other library systems.
